Stories of success have certainly been overshadowed during the past year; however, one standout example of good news has been New Zealand’s effective coronavirus response, due in part to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
Ardern’s popularity has risen across the country, contributing to her landslide victory in the latest elections in October last year. She has been praised for making firm and timely decisions as well as inspiring a spirit of togetherness during the pandemic. Her actions inspired those who may traditionally have voted against her party to back her for another term.
Trust is a vital element of leadership which builds support, and it is this following that determines the popularity and success of a leader. Ardern’s mixture of compassionate yet decisive governing made her the only real candidate to lead her country. The power of empathy should not be overlooked.
